can a rye sourdough starter go bad, when it is being started. what health risks are there?

i have made sourdough with ordinary wholewheat flour and it was really easy. i wanted to try with rye flour, it has fermented but tastes it is sour but has strange (off) aftertaste. so i dont know is it contaminated with something bad and should i start
