Own Volvo S40 with a bad cat. Will computer recognize aftermarket part and turn off check engine light?

Mechanic has advised me that if I use an aftermarket cat converter that the sw in the computer will not recognize the part. The check engine light will remain on. Is this true? If it is, is there a way around it?

my answer is try to check it out first on auto repair shop...
